Changelog

Stay up to date with the latest updates and improvements to SurfSense.

  1. Version 2.2.3October 21, 2026

    What's New in v2.2.3

v2.2.3 lets you use your Claude plan in SurfSense, connects any remote MCP server as a plugin, and reads scans and photos with OCR first, which in our tests had scans ready in about half the time. Get it from the downloads page.

    Use your Claude plan

    • Claude in chat and Agentic mode: Settings › Add model, and onboarding, have a Use your Claude plan row. With a Claude Pro, Max or Team plan, SurfSense answers chats, titles, Studio and Agentic chats through the Claude Code you already have installed and signed in. SurfSense never signs in to Claude and never holds your Claude credentials.
    • Setup that says what's missing: The dialog checks your Claude Code and tells you whether it's not installed, too old, signed out or ready. Add Claude models asks once to allow api.anthropic.com and platform.claude.com.
    • Switch models mid-thread: An Agentic chat can move between a Claude plan model and any other model. The thread reads as one conversation, and the new model is told what it missed.
    • Errors of its own: Sign-in, plan-limit and network failures show as their own chat errors. Testing a model on a ChatGPT or Claude plan says it counts toward the plan's limits instead of costing money.

    Plugins

    • Connect any remote MCP server: Add custom plugin is one screen: a name, a URL and Connect. Keys and other headers go under Advanced settings. Servers on the older SSE transport connect too, and a failure says why: it needs a key or sign-in, isn't an MCP server, can't be reached, or has moved.
    • Sign in to more servers: OAuth sign-in works with more providers, including SSE servers such as Asana's and Atlassian's. A provider that takes only registered apps, such as GitHub, walks you through registering your own OAuth app in three steps.
    • One button per plugin: A plugin's page has Connect while it isn't connected and Disconnect once it is, with everything else in its menu. In Yours, a plugin that isn't connected shows Connect in its row and why in grey, such as Sign-in expired or Key refused.
    • Third-party plugins off means off: While Allow third-party plugins is off, SurfSense contacts no third-party plugin's server at all, and turning it off ends any sign-in under way.
    • Your plugin keys stay in SurfSense: The agent reaches every plugin through SurfSense, which adds the key or sign-in itself, so the agent never sees them. An expired sign-in is refreshed mid-chat.
    • More tools per chat: The 24-tool limit is gone. Claude plan chats get every ready tool, and other models get as many as fit the model's context, with a plugin you mention first. A plugin left out is named, with how to bring it in.
    • Why a sign-in failed: A failed plugin sign-in says why, in your language, such as "You declined the sign-in." or "The sign-in wasn't finished in time. Try again."
    • Notion is Verified: Notion is now listed as Verified. The list comes from plugins.surfsense.com, so v2.2.2 shows it too.

    Scans and photos

    • OCR first, Docling only when needed: Scanned PDFs and photos are read by OCR alone: RapidOCR on Windows and Linux, and Apple's Vision on a Mac. Docling reads only a page whose OCR came out garbled. In our tests on one Windows PC, 9 real scanned PDFs (199 pages) were all ready in 509 s instead of 829 s, and 40 receipts and forms in 113 s instead of 202 s, with far less CPU.
    • Better answers from scans: On 499 real pages, OCR alone kept more of each page than Docling did, including page numbers and headers Docling dropped, and answers to questions about them were more often right.

    Settings

    • Where your data is: Settings › About has a Your data row showing the folder that holds your models, workspaces and settings, with Open folder.

    No longer broken

    • Numbered lists in Studio Word files: Each numbered list starts at 1, instead of carrying on from the list before it.
    • A full local model offers Retry: When a model running on this computer runs out of room mid-reply, the chat offers Retry instead of saying SurfSense can't run the model or that something went wrong.

    Known issues

    • The first start needs free disk space: v2.2.3 copies your library database before upgrading it, so the first start needs free space about the size of ~/.surfsense/surfsense.db. Without it, SurfSense closes without a message. Free some space and start it again.
    • Going back to v2.2.2 needs a manual restore: v2.2.2 can't open the upgraded database. Quit SurfSense and replace ~/.surfsense/surfsense.db with the copy saved at the upgrade, ~/.surfsense/backups/0030-0032.db, before you reinstall v2.2.2. If surfsense.db-wal or surfsense.db-shm is still there, delete it too. Anything added since the update won't be in the copy. If you updated straight from v2.2.1, the copy is 0029-0032.db.

    Developers

    • Decisions: ADR 0057 runs a Claude plan through your own Claude Code, ADR 0062 reads a scan by OCR alone before Docling, and ADRs 0063 to 0065 cover plugin connections, the plugin gateway and sizing a chat's tools by the model's window.
    • Turning OCR-first off: SURFSENSE_LOCAL_SCAN_OCR=off sends scans to Docling as before. Set it in the environment and restart SurfSense.
    • Plugin publishers: Registry entries can name the headers a key goes in, user_client and transport. Plugins are submitted through an issue form that a bot checks against the live server, and a custom plugin can be offered to the registry from its menu.
  2. Version 2.2.2October 16, 2026

    What's New in v2.2.2

v2.2.2 makes sources usable seconds after you add them, and adds speech recognition that runs on this computer: recordings become sources, and a mic in the composer turns your voice into text. In our tests on one Windows PC, the mean time from adding a file to it being ready fell from 476 s to 44 s across 231 real files. In Agentic chats, plugins get ready sooner, and one that hangs no longer takes the others with it. Get it from the downloads page.

    Sources ready in seconds

    • PDFs with a text layer: A PDF made on a computer, rather than scanned, is now read from its own text, which takes milliseconds a page. In our tests a 46-page budget PDF was ready in about 9 s instead of about 2 minutes.
    • PDFs with a few scanned pages: When at most half the pages are a scan, a cover photo or a turned page, only those pages go through Docling, the slower reader. Scans, filled-in forms and PDFs whose text can't be read are still read whole by Docling.
    • Word files: .docx files have their own reader, about 9 times as fast in our tests. Numbering matches what Word shows, such as 9.3, (b) or 12(c)(i), and citations quote those numbers. Footnotes and endnotes are now searchable, and tracked changes are read as accepted. Word files with charts, and Excel and PowerPoint files, are read as before.
    • Faster embedding: On Windows and Linux PCs with x64 processors, the bundled embedding model (bge-small) now runs at full precision, which made it about 6 times as fast on our Windows test PC. Nothing already indexed is embedded again.
    • Quicker to start: A batch of dropped files starts with the ones that are already text (.md, .txt), then goes smallest first, with recordings last. SurfSense starts on an upload within half a second instead of up to 10 s.
    • Long scans give way: After a minute, a long scan lets a new note or upload go ahead of it. Cancel stops it within 8 pages instead of at the end of the file. If you quit partway, the row shows Ingestion failed, and Retry carries on from the pages already read.
    • Basic (Q&A) says when sources are still being read: When some ticked sources aren't read yet and nothing already read matches your question, the reply says how many are still being read and to ask again. Before, it said your sources didn't cover the question.

    Speech recognition

    • Recordings as sources: Add .wav, .mp3, .flac, .ogg or .oga files like any other source. SurfSense transcribes them on this computer, and chat, search, citations, Studio and the agent read the transcript, which marks where each passage starts with a time such as [00:42:10]. In our tests on a desktop PC it ran at 11.5 times real time, so an hour of audio takes about 5 minutes.
    • Progress you can see: The row shows how far it has got, such as "Transcribing · 23 of 58 min · about 7 min left". About once a minute, a long recording lets other uploads and notes go ahead of it. Cancel stops it within 28 s of audio, and Retry carries on where it stopped.
    • Voice input: A mic sits beside Send in every chat, Basic (Q&A) or Agentic. Text appears a phrase at a time as you pause. Enter or Send puts it in the box without sending it, Escape cancels, and holding the mic down is push-to-talk. Voice input stops after 5 minutes. Your voice stays in memory on this computer, and nothing goes to an online service.
    • Settings › Speech recognition: Add model offers two models. Nemotron 3.5 ASR Streaming 0.6B (931 MB) knows 26 languages and detects which one it hears. Canary 180M Flash (249 MB) does English, German and French, and needs less free memory. Spoken language sets the language of your recordings and voice input, and Nemotron also offers Detect automatically.
    • Set up when you need it: The first press of the mic opens "Set up speech recognition", which downloads a model once. A recording added before that waits with Set up on its row, then starts by itself once a model is chosen, with no need to upload it again.
    • Microphone access: macOS asks before SurfSense uses the microphone. If microphone access is off in your system's settings, the composer says so, with Open settings. Only SurfSense's own window can use the microphone, and requests for the camera or the screen are refused.

    Plugins

    • Search plugins: A search box in Settings › Plugins looks through Yours and Browse at once, by name, description, author or tool. Third-party plugins are searched once Allow third-party plugins is on.
    • Three permissions per tool: In a plugin's details, each tool has three icons: Always allowed, Needs approval and Blocked. Hover a tool's name to read its description. The Read-only and Can make changes groups fold away, and each has a menu that sets every tool in the group at once. Your existing tool settings carry over.
    • Replies start sooner: In an Agentic chat, plugins get ready while your sources sync instead of after. In our tests, a cold chat with 8 plugins used to spend about 2 to 9 s on them first, depending on the network. The check for changed tools no longer holds a message up for more than 3 s.
    • License status at once: Importing, replacing or removing a license in Settings › License updates SurfSense's plugins right away: Needs a license, License expired, License revoked or License not recognized, or back to On. A plugin your license doesn't unlock is no longer offered after @ or given to the agent.
    • Faster SurfSense plugins: In our tests, an Indeed search took about 2 s instead of 77 s, an Amazon search 2 s instead of 58 s, and a YouTube video with subtitles under 1 s instead of 13 s. The agent now reads each result's data, such as prices, page text and reviews, not just a list of titles, and Amazon search returns products again. These plugins run on plugins.surfsense.com, so v2.2.1 gets this too.
    • Longer calls: SurfSense's own plugins can now run for up to 300 s instead of 200 s, so long scrapes time out less often. When the agent gives up on a call to one of them, the plugin host stops it too.
    • Notion and DeepWiki: With Allow third-party plugins on, Browse lists Notion, a Community plugin that signs in with your Notion account. DeepWiki is now Verified. The list comes from plugins.surfsense.com, so v2.2.1 shows them too.

    Chat, Studio and Settings

    • Use your ChatGPT plan: Settings › Text gen › Add model, and onboarding, have a Use your ChatGPT plan row below Use a server. Sign in with ChatGPT opens the sign-in in your browser in one click, where it used to take four or five through the Provider list in Connect a server. It needs a ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan.
    • Podcasts as MP3: Studio's Podcast saves the episode as MP3, about a sixth of the size of the WAV it used to be, and Download gives a .mp3 file named after the episode.
    • Larger Settings: The Settings dialog is about 1024 by 768 instead of 1000 by 640, with a wider sidebar, and it shrinks to fit a small window. The chat column is wider too.
    • Buttons: Buttons shrink slightly when pressed, unless your system asks for reduced motion. Secondary buttons stand out more, and the Connect button on Browse cards is filled.
    • Third-party license notices: The installers now include the license notices of the third-party software SurfSense ships, in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt in the app's resources/licenses folder. The app doesn't show them yet.

    No longer broken

    • One plugin that hangs no longer takes every plugin out of an Agentic chat. After 25 s only that plugin shows "Couldn't reach" with its name, and the others keep working.
    • After you remove a license or it expires, SurfSense's plugins no longer stay On until a call fails. A chat now says the plugin "needs a SurfSense license" instead of asking you to sign in again.
    • A reply that the model's server cuts off with an error now ends as failed, keeping the text written so far, with Retry. Before, the cut-off text was saved as a finished answer. Test chat, when you choose a model, shows the server's error too.
    • When the agent keeps crashing, SurfSense restarts it after 10 s, then after 20 s, and after three quick crashes stops with one "The agent stopped" notification. An Agentic chat then fails at once instead of after about a minute, and your next Agentic message tries again. Before, it restarted every 10 s and showed "A background service stopped" each time.
    • Clicking Settings behind a dialog opened from it, such as Add custom plugin or a confirmation, no longer presses buttons in Settings. It closes the dialog in front.
    • Secondary buttons no longer almost vanish on hovered rows and cards in dark mode.
    • When a script the agent or Studio runs fails, its error shows paths relative to the script's own folder instead of long temporary paths, so more of the error fits in the tooltip and the agent has more to fix the script with.
    • Studio's Refine box now gives most of its reasons for turning down a request in your language.
    • On Windows, a source deleted while its figures were being extracted could leave files behind for the next file you uploaded to pick up. Uploads now clear them first.

    Known issues

    • The first start needs free disk space: v2.2.2 copies your library database before upgrading it, so the first start needs free space about the size of ~/.surfsense/surfsense.db. Without it, SurfSense closes without a message. Free some space and start it again.
    • Going back to v2.2.1 needs a manual restore: v2.2.1 can't open the upgraded database. Quit SurfSense and replace ~/.surfsense/surfsense.db with the copy saved at the upgrade, ~/.surfsense/backups/0029-0030.db, before you reinstall v2.2.1. If surfsense.db-wal or surfsense.db-shm is still there, delete it too. Anything added since the update, such as sources, recordings, chats and notes, won't be in the copy. If you updated straight from v2.2.0, the copy is 0027-0030.db. To get back the speech model's disk space, delete the model in Settings › Speech recognition before you go back.
    • Sources you already have aren't read again: PDF and Word sources added before v2.2.2 keep their earlier reading. To get the new one, delete the source and add it again.
    • Figures come after the text: A PDF read from its text layer, or a Word file with images, gets its figures in a background pass after it shows as ready. A PDF over 40 pages, or one whose charts are drawn as lines, gets them only when the agent or Studio asks. Until then the agent is told to ask again in a minute, and a Studio draft places no figures from that source. The pass keeps the CPU busy for a few minutes after your sources are ready, and a model running on this computer shares the CPU with it.
    • PDFs read from their text layer are plain text: They have no headings, and a table becomes lines of values without columns, which is what citations show. To have Docling read every PDF, see Developers.
    • Scans are as slow as before: A scanned PDF is still read by Docling, so a 20-page scan takes about as long as it did, and a long reading shows no progress in Sources.
    • No faster embedding on Macs: The embedding model runs as before on macOS. The new PDF and Word readers still apply.
    • Some recording formats can't be added yet: Opus (in .ogg, .oga or .opus files), .m4a, .aac and .webm aren't supported, and many apps save voice notes as Opus. A file can be up to 500 MB. A recording can't be played, and a citation can't open it at its time.
    • Speech recognition needs a download and free memory: The model is a one-time download of 931 MB or 249 MB. Loading it needs about 2.9 GB of free memory for Nemotron or 1.9 GB for Canary, which a busy 8 GB computer may not have.
    • Tell Canary the language you speak: Canary can't detect the language, and set to the wrong one it may write English instead of a transcript. It doesn't offer Spanish yet. One Spoken language covers both recordings and voice input.
    • Voice input uses your default microphone, with no choice of device. If the speech recognition engine crashes, the notice reads "A background service stopped" and asks you to restart, though SurfSense restarts it by itself.
    • Three plugin tools turn off once: With the plugin host update, YouTube's scrape and comments and TikTok's scrape have new descriptions, so they're marked Changed and stay off until you allow them again in the plugin's details. Google Search now returns 4 to 9 People Also Ask questions instead of 9 to 12.
    • Notion has more tools than a chat gives the agent: Notion lists 39 tools, and a chat gives the agent the first 24 plugin tools plus every tool of a plugin you mention. Type @notion when you want the agent to use it.

    Developers

    • Turning the new readers off: SURFSENSE_LOCAL_PDF_TEXT_LAYER=off sends every PDF to Docling whole, SURFSENSE_LOCAL_DOCX_READER=docling puts Docling back for Word, and SURFSENSE_LOCAL_EMBED_PRECISION=fp16 runs the embedder as shipped (fp32 upcasts it on any processor). Set one in the environment and restart SurfSense; there's no setting for them in the app.
    • Decisions: ADR 0056 runs speech recognition on a second audio.cpp server, ADR 0058 runs the bundled embedder at FP32 on x86-64, and ADR 0059 reads a born-digital PDF from its text layer. ADR 0057 plans a way to use a Claude plan through your own Claude Code; it isn't built.
    • Source checkouts: Run uv sync in surfsense_local/backend for the new audio packages, miniaudio and lameenc. pnpm dev now stages audio.cpp again by itself when the staged copy lacks a model family SurfSense needs, such as the speech ones; compiling it on Windows or Linux takes about 4 to 5 minutes. On Windows it compiles with Visual Studio's C++ tools, whatever cmake comes first on your PATH.
    • Plugin publishers: Verified now means SurfSense's maintainers judged that the author runs the server, and an entry no longer needs a domain (ADR 0055). CI connects to each plugin a pull request adds or changes. plugins/registry/README.md is the guide to listing one, and GitHub has a Report a plugin issue form.
    • Third-party notices: pnpm build:notices writes THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt and .json for the installer, and fails the build when a dependency has no license text and no reasoned entry in surfsense_local/electron/scripts/notices/allowed-without-text.json.
    • Desktop tests on three systems: The backend and Electron tests now run on Linux, macOS and Windows for every push to dev, as checks named after the system, such as Backend (windows-latest) and Electron (macos-latest).
  3. Version 2.2.1October 14, 2026

    What's New in v2.2.1

v2.2.1 brings plugins to the desktop app. A plugin is an MCP server whose tools the agent can use in an Agentic chat, for example to search Google, read a web page or look up products and job listings. You choose which plugins to connect, which tools the agent may use and which ones ask first. Get it from the downloads page, and read more on the plugins page.

    Plugins

    • Settings › Plugins: Browse lists what you can connect, each with a page showing its tools and who runs it. Yours lists your connected plugins, which you can switch off, disconnect (keeping their tool settings) or remove.
    • SurfSense's own plugins: Google Search, Web Crawl, YouTube, TikTok, Google Maps, Amazon, Walmart and Indeed, which need a SurfSense license. Get a free 30-day one on the downloads page and add it in Settings › License, or see the pricing page.
    • Third-party plugins: Turn on Allow third-party plugins to see a list that SurfSense signs, starting with DeepWiki. Each entry is Verified, meaning SurfSense checked who runs the server, or Community. Connecting a Community plugin first asks whether you trust its author.
    • Any MCP server by URL: Once third-party plugins are allowed, Add custom plugin connects a remote MCP server, with a key if it needs one. Servers that run as a local command, such as npx or uvx, can't be added yet.
    • Tool permissions: Each tool has its own switch and, for most, Ask or Always allow. A tool that doesn't declare itself read-only or harmless always asks, and one a server adds or changes later stays off until you allow it.
    • Plugins in the chat: In an Agentic chat, type @ and pick a plugin, such as @amazon, to have the agent use it. The "+" menu switches plugins on and off. Each plugin step shows its whole result with Save to Sources, and a tool set to Ask waits on its step for Allow once or Deny.

    No longer broken

    • Importing a SurfSense cloud export again now adds the chats an interrupted import missed. For a workspace imported before v2.2.1, keep your export ZIP, delete the workspace and import the ZIP again.
    • When your data folder sits inside a git repository, an Agentic chat can no longer reach other chats' and workspaces' folders.
    • Studio now builds PowerPoint and Excel files in the script runner, as it already did for Word and PDF, so Cancel stops a running script.
    • The Word viewer refits when you resize its panel.
    • More messages appear in your language, including why a Studio job can't start, run again or stop.

    Known issues

    • The first start needs free disk space: v2.2.1 copies your library database before upgrading it, so the first start needs free space about the size of ~/.surfsense/surfsense.db. Without it, SurfSense closes without a message. Free some space and start it again.
    • Going back to v2.2.0 needs a manual restore: v2.2.0 can't open the upgraded database. Quit SurfSense and replace ~/.surfsense/surfsense.db with the copy saved at the upgrade, ~/.surfsense/backups/0027-0029.db, before you reinstall v2.2.0. Anything added since the update, connected plugins included, won't be in it.
    • Plugins work only in Agentic chats: Choose Agentic when you start a chat. Chats on a model that runs on this computer start in Basic (Q&A), which doesn't use plugins.
    • Some plugin results are unreliable: When Amazon, Walmart or YouTube blocks a request, the agent may say nothing was found. TikTok's user search works only some of the time, and a deep Web Crawl or a Google Search over many queries can time out.

    Developers

    • Any remote MCP server over Streamable HTTP on HTTPS works as a plugin. To list yours, open a pull request to plugins/registry, following plugins/README.md.
  4. Version 2.2.0October 9, 2026

    What's New in v2.2.0

v2.2.0 is the first desktop release whose installers include the agent. Each new chat runs in Basic (Q&A), which answers from your sources, or Agentic, which works on your files. Sources also gets folders, and replies keep running in the background. Get it from the downloads page.

    Basic (Q&A) and Agentic

    • One mode per chat: Pick the mode in the composer when you start a chat. A chat keeps its mode, so picking the other one opens a new chat. SurfSense remembers your choice for each model.
    • Open to capable models: Agentic works with any model that can use tools and has a context window of at least 32,768 tokens. New chats start in Agentic only on a model that passed SurfSense's Agentic tests and runs on a server. 270 models are now rated, up from 11, and Settings › Text gen shows your model's result.
    • Only what you tick: An Agentic chat sees only the sources you ticked, and it can't take images yet.

What the agent does with your files

    • Office files and PDFs: The agent makes Word, PDF, PowerPoint and Excel files from your sources, and can use a ticked .docx or .pptx as a template. Each edit becomes a new version in Studio.
    • Revised copies: The agent edits a copy of your Word, Excel or PowerPoint file, never the original. Word edits show as tracked changes, with comments where needed. In Studio you can Accept all or Reject all, and download With changes or Clean.
    • PDF tools and data analysis: The agent can merge, split, rotate and stamp PDF pages, fill in PDF forms, and turn ticked spreadsheets and CSV files into tables and charts.
    • Office support: Settings › Office support downloads LibreOffice only after you agree, or uses a copy you already have. It gives exact Word and PowerPoint previews, true totals in the spreadsheets the agent makes, and conversion to PDF.

    Sources and Studio

    • Folders: Organize Sources into folders, upload a whole folder, and tick a folder to use everything inside. Chat, Studio and the agent read exactly what you tick.
    • Resizable columns: Drag the edge of Sources or Studio to resize it.
    • Refine: Rewrites a Word or PDF document that Studio made into its next version.
    • Markdown: The Summary format is now Markdown and downloads as a .md file.

    Chats that keep going

    • Background replies: A reply keeps running when you switch chats, reload or close the window, and several chats can answer at once. The Chats dialog marks chats that are writing, need your approval or are unread, and SurfSense asks before quitting while replies run.
    • Smooth streaming: Long chats no longer lag or freeze while a reply streams.
    • Qwen3.8 27B: Now first in the curated chat models. It reads images and is meant for 24 GB machines.

    No longer broken

    • Deleting an image or audio model while it's in use no longer leaves it half removed.
    • A message with more images than the model's context window can hold is refused up front, saying how many fit.
    • Signing out of or deleting a ChatGPT connection now revokes its sign-in at OpenAI.
    • Screen readers announce "Reply finished" when a reply ends.

    Known issues

    • The first start needs free disk space: v2.2.0 copies your library database before upgrading it, so the first start needs free space about the size of ~/.surfsense/surfsense.db. Without it, SurfSense closes without a message. Free some space and start it again.
    • Going back to v2.1.0 needs a manual restore: v2.1.0 can't open the upgraded database. Quit SurfSense and replace ~/.surfsense/surfsense.db with the copy saved at the upgrade, ~/.surfsense/backups/0023-0027.db, before you reinstall v2.1.0.
    • An interrupted cloud import can miss chats: If an import from the hosted app stops partway, importing the same export again doesn't bring in the missed chats. Keep your export ZIP, delete the imported workspace and import the ZIP again.
  5. Version 2.1.0October 4, 2026

    What's New in v2.1.0

v2.1.0 lets chat read images and run on a ChatGPT plan, adds your own notes to the sources panel, lets a server voice podcasts, and parses documents faster with fewer OCR mistakes. It also includes work from 17 first-time contributors. Get it from the downloads page.

    Chat and models

    • Images in chat: Attach up to four images from the composer's "+" menu, or paste them. With a text-only model the option is disabled and says why.
    • ChatGPT subscription: In Settings › Text gen, add a model, choose ChatGPT subscription and sign in to chat on your Plus or Pro plan without an API key.
    • Anthropic with just a key: Connecting to Anthropic no longer asks for a base URL.
    • Thinking switch: Turn Thinking off in the "+" menu and a model running on this computer answers without thinking first. While a local model reads a long prompt, the reply shows "Reading 42%" instead of "Thinking".
    • Choose your embedding model: New installs pick it in the last onboarding step, from a list that includes a multilingual model, or from ONNX models on Hugging Face. The choice is permanent. Existing libraries keep bge-small, and nothing is re-embedded.

    Sources and Studio

    • Notes and renaming: The sources panel has a New note button beside Add, and any source can be renamed from its menu. Files dropped on the panel are added as sources.
    • PDF preview: Choose Preview on a PDF source to read it in the left sidebar.
    • Podcasts voiced by a server: Podcasts can use an audio model on any server with an OpenAI-compatible speech endpoint. Add and test voices under Voices for this model.
    • Studio reads every selected document: When a selection is too large to send whole, each document gets an equal share, instead of the first few taking all the space.
    • Steadier quizzes and flashcards: Their replies are held to the expected shape, so small local models fail these jobs less often.

    Your computer

    • Better document parsing: Images parse without an internet connection, and OCR no longer turns upright lines of noisy scans upside down. In our tests, character errors on 150 to 300 dpi scans fell from 3.24% to 0.38%, and photos parsed in under half the time.
    • Settings › Resources: Live CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM use, for the whole computer and for each SurfSense engine.
    • Report issue tab: Settings tabs are grouped, and Report issue has its own tab, which Help › Report Issue… also opens.
    • Licenses: With no license, Settings › License offers Start a free trial and See pricing.
    • Safer installs: A curated model too big for this computer is refused before it downloads.

    No longer broken

    • Cancelling a podcast stops after the line being voiced, instead of voicing the rest.
    • Deleting a Studio output as a document also deletes its files.
    • A chat reply that ends with no answer is discarded with an error, instead of leaving a blank bubble.
    • An image that a server returns as a link is fetched only after you allow its host in Settings › Network.
    • A table at the end of a document keeps its last row.

    Developers

    • Plugin groundwork: the surfsense_plugin_sdk package and the surfsense-plugins CLI, with an example in plugins/example. Plugins still show Coming soon in the app.
    • An opencode-based agent, off by default and left out of the installers. Set SURFSENSE_LOCAL_OPENCODE_ENABLED=1 to stage it for development.
    • Dependencies with security advisories were updated across the app, website and backend.
  6. Version 2.0.3September 26, 2026

    What's New in v2.0.3

v2.0.3 changes how the desktop app runs models. Chat now runs on a llama.cpp runtime bundled with the app instead of Ollama, image and podcast models come from the same catalog, and each model is checked against your hardware before you download it. The app also speaks ten languages. Get it from the downloads page.

    Local models

    • llama.cpp replaces Ollama: The bundled runtime uses your graphics card through Vulkan on Windows and Linux and Metal on Apple Silicon.
    • Sized for your computer: Seven curated chat models, Qwen3 from 0.6B to 32B plus Gemma 3 4B, are checked against your memory and graphics card, and a star marks the one recommended for you. Anything else can be found by searching Hugging Face, once you allow SurfSense to contact it.
    • Downloads that keep going: A download keeps running when you leave its page, a second one waits its turn, and a cancelled one picks up where it stopped when you try again.
    • One section per model type: Settings has Text gen, Image gen, Image edit, Audio and Video sections, each listing local models next to models from your servers. Setup walks through the same steps, and only a chat model is required.
    • Upgrading from v2.0.2: A chat model chosen through Ollama can't carry over. Choose one again in Settings › Text gen.

    Images and podcasts in Studio

    • More image models: FLUX.2 klein 4B, Z-Image Turbo, ERNIE-Image Turbo and LongCat-Image join Stable Diffusion 1.5 and XL. Listed models must allow commercial use, so SDXL Turbo is gone.
    • Room to generate: Studio unloads the chat model before a local image or podcast, and it loads again on your next question.
    • Image editing and video, early: You can already choose image editing and video models, but no Studio format uses them yet.
    • New podcast voices: Podcasts are voiced by Kokoro 82M, Supertonic 3 or KittenTTS Mini 0.8. Kokoro ships with the app and is selected automatically, so podcasts work without setup. Voices are grouped by Female and Male.

    Chat and search

    • Watch a model think: Thinking models stream their reasoning, then fold it away as "Thought for N seconds". A long think no longer times out.
    • Better ranking: Search now ranks by meaning and keywords together. On our 266-query test, the passage holding the answer was among the five sent to chat 98% of the time, up from 50%.
    • More grounded small models: A rewritten prompt took Qwen3 1.7B from 24 to 30 grounded answers out of 33 in our chat test.

    Around the app

    • Ten languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Simplified Chinese. The app follows your system language, or you can pick one in Settings › General › Language.
    • Report issue: A button in the sidebar and on every error toast shows this session's log and opens a prefilled GitHub bug report, with the log copied to your clipboard to paste in.
    • Settings › About: Your version, update checks, links and Copy system info. macOS also gets a Help menu.

    No longer broken

    • The app opens instead of stopping at "SurfSense could not start" when a saved key can't be read, a server is unreachable or network access is off. A notice by the chat box says why.
    • Cancelling a Studio job stops the model within about a second, so chat no longer waits behind a cancelled mind map.

    Developers

    • Chat and retrieval evals live in surfsense_local/backend/scripts, and the search decisions are in ADRs 0031 to 0033.
    • CI now runs the desktop tests, with one workflow per product.
  7. Version 2.0.2September 21, 2026

    What's New in v2.0.2

v2.0.2 is a small release. It fixes a startup failure after a reinstall and gives the installers fixed names, so download links keep working from one release to the next. Get it from the downloads page.

    Downloads

    • Installers without a version number: The files are now SurfSense-Setup.exe (Windows), SurfSense-arm64.dmg (macOS, Apple Silicon), and SurfSense.AppImage and SurfSense.deb (Linux). A GitHub link ending in /releases/latest/download/ plus one of those names always fetches the newest build.
    • Latest on GitHub is the current app: The Latest label on GitHub releases now marks the newest 2.x release instead of the retired v0.0.40. Old 0.0.x installs are still offered v0.0.40, which points them to the sunset page.

    No longer broken

    • API keys saved before the app's secret was replaced, for example by a reinstall, left the app stuck on "SurfSense could not start". The app now drops keys it can no longer read and starts, and you enter the key again.

    Developers

    • The Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Hindi and Simplified Chinese READMEs were rewritten for v2.0, and the language switcher is back.
    • surfsense_local/scripts/bump-version.sh now works on Windows, where python3 can be a Microsoft Store alias that doesn't run.
  8. Version 2.0.0September 18, 2026

    What's New in v2.0.0

v2.0.0 makes SurfSense a free, open-source desktop app that runs on your own computer. In July we said SurfSense would become a hosted platform for AI agents. We have changed course, and the hosted app is being retired. You ask questions across your documents and get cited answers, then turn the same documents into decks, reports, study material and podcasts. The index stays on your disk, you choose the model, and there is no account. Get it for Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon) or Linux from the downloads page.

If you used the hosted app

    • Export before 18 October 2026: The hosted app now only exports your data, and the sunset page walks you through it. Hosted accounts are deleted when the export window closes.
    • Import into the desktop app: In Settings › General, find Import from SurfSense cloud, click Upload and pick the exported ZIP. Workspaces, folders and chats come across, and documents arrive as text that the app indexes on your computer. Original files and generated artifacts are not imported.
    • Old desktop app: Versions 0.0.x don't update to v2.0 on their own. Install the new app from the downloads page.
    • Self-hosting: The Docker stack stays open source and is now community-supported.

    Your documents, your model

    • Any model: Use any OpenAI-compatible API, a local server such as LM Studio or Ollama, or let the app download a model for you. Settings › Models offers Qwen3 in six sizes, and Scan hardware lists more that fit your computer.
    • Prompts that fit the model: Chat and Studio pick one of three prompt styles to suit your model, so small local models get short, strict instructions.

    Studio

    • Twelve formats: Summary, Word, Slides, Spreadsheet, Web page, PDF, Mind map, Flashcards, Quiz, Podcast, Image and Infographic. Word, Slides and Spreadsheet are editable .docx, .pptx and .xlsx files.
    • Offline podcasts and images: The bundled Kokoro voice reads podcasts on your computer. Download SD 1.5, SDXL Base or SDXL Turbo once to make images and infographics locally.
    • Built-in viewers: PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets and slides open inside the app, and quiz and flashcard progress is saved. A running job can be cancelled.

    Private by default

    • Nothing leaves until you allow it: Model downloads, remote providers and update checks stay off until you say yes. Settings › Network lists every destination with its own switch.
    • Keys in your keychain: API keys are stored encrypted, with the secret held in your operating system's keychain.
    • No telemetry: No usage tracking and no crash reporting.

    Licenses

    • The app is free: The app and its updates cost nothing. A license adds paid plugins and priority support, and when it expires the app keeps working. No plugins ship in v2.0.0; the first one planned is the web data API from our July announcement.
    • A free 30-day license: Enter your email on the downloads page and the license file arrives by email, with no card needed. Add it in Settings › License, which checks it offline. The license page resends a lost file, and plans are on the pricing page.

    No longer broken

These fixes shipped the same day as v2.0.1:

    • The macOS app failed at startup because its build used a Python that couldn't load SQLite extensions.
    • The app quit at startup when the keychain could no longer unlock its stored secret, for example after a reinstall. It now starts, and you enter your API keys again.
    • The update check in v2.0.0 looked at the wrong release and found nothing. If you're still on v2.0.0, install the current version from the downloads page.
  9. ReleaseAugust 16, 2026

Reports and resumes have moved to artifacts

SurfSense now creates reports, resumes, and other deliverables through the artifacts system. Deliverables generated by the previous report and resume tools are no longer available after this upgrade. Ask SurfSense to regenerate an old deliverable to receive a new artifact that can be viewed and downloaded from the artifacts library.

Document export has also been removed from the document editor. Download generated deliverables from the artifacts library, or export a workspace or folder as a ZIP when you need a Markdown copy of knowledge-base content.

  10. ReleaseJuly 5, 2026

SurfSense's Next Chapter: Open Web Research for AI Agents

We announced a new direction for SurfSense: giving AI agents the primitives to research the open web, through platform connectors for live data, an MCP server and automations, while everything existing users relied on kept working.

Since then SurfSense has become a free desktop app, and the live-data connectors ship as plugins for it. See the entries for v2.0.0 and v2.2.1 above.

  11. Version 0.0.26May 31, 2026

    What's New in v0.0.26

v0.0.26 is our biggest workflow release yet: AI automations land in SurfSense. If you've been looking for open source AI automation, a self-hosted AI agent that runs on a schedule, or document workflow automation that reacts the instant a file shows up, this release is for you. Describe what you want in plain English, let SurfSense draft the automation, approve it, and your agent runs on its own: on a cron schedule or triggered by real events in your knowledge base. Best of all, automations work across your connectors, so one workflow can search and act on Notion, Slack, Google Drive, Gmail, GitHub, Linear, Jira and Confluence. This release also brings connector @-mentions into chat, a faster anonymous chat experience, and a redesigned homepage.

    AI Automations

Turn one-off prompts into repeatable, hands-off AI agent workflows.

    • Build Automations From Chat: Describe an automation in plain English and SurfSense drafts it for you. Review the generated workflow in a human-in-the-loop approval card, tweak it, and save. No config files, no code.
    • Scheduled AI Workflows: Run an agent on a cron schedule for daily briefs, weekly digests, and recurring reports. SurfSense computes the next run time and fires it automatically in the background.
    • Event-Triggered Automations: Kick off an agent the moment a document enters a folder. SurfSense's new in-process event bus watches your knowledge base and launches the right automation as soon as the event happens.
    • Agent Task Action: Every automation runs a full multi-agent chat turn, so your scheduled and event-driven runs have the same reasoning, search, and tool access as a live chat, with an auto-approve loop so they finish unattended.
    • Automations Across Your Connectors: Because each automation runs a full agent turn, your scheduled and event-triggered workflows can search and act across all 25+ connected sources, including Notion, Slack, Google Drive, Gmail, GitHub, Linear, Jira, Confluence, and your Obsidian vault.
    • Automations Dashboard: A dedicated list view shows every automation with its status, plus one-click pause, resume, and delete. Find it in the sidebar under Inbox.
    • Detail & Run History: Open any automation to inspect its definition, manage triggers inline, and browse a complete run history with inputs, outputs, and clear error reporting.
    • Power-User JSON Mode: Create or edit an automation directly as raw JSON with a unified JSON viewer and editor for full control over the workflow definition.
    • Role-Based Access: Automations are governed by SurfSense's RBAC system, with a dedicated permissions family so teams control exactly who can create, run, and manage them.

    Connector Mentions in Chat

    • @-Mention Your Connectors: Mention connectors directly in the composer to scope a question to a specific source like Notion, Slack, Google Drive, Gmail, GitHub, Linear, Jira, or Confluence, alongside existing document mentions.
    • Recent Mentions: SurfSense now remembers your recent mentions so the sources you use most are always one keystroke away.
    • Smoother Mention Picker: A refreshed mention picker with loading skeletons, clearer connector definitions, and a better inline editing experience.

    Faster, Friendlier Chat

    • Anonymous Chat, Reworked: The free, no-login chat experience has been rebuilt for a faster first impression and a cleaner anonymous-to-account path.
    • Better Long-Running Turns: Improved task management and timeout handling in multi-agent chat keep complex, tool-heavy conversations reliable.
    • Leaner Toolset: Retired the legacy in-product docs search tool to keep agent reasoning focused and fast.

    Homepage & Marketing

    • Redesigned Use-Case Showcase: The homepage now groups demos into clear categories (Desktop App, Deliverable Studio, Search & Chat, Connectors & Integrations, and Automations) so visitors immediately see what SurfSense can do.
    • Desktop App, Front and Center: The desktop experience is highlighted as a set of native extras on top of everything SurfSense already does, not a separate product.

    No longer broken

    • Bulk-moving documents now uses ORM objects so folder events fire correctly and trigger automations
    • Automation enum columns now persist Postgres enum values instead of names
    • Automation agent tasks use an in-memory checkpointer to avoid Celery pool timeouts
    • The API client now handles 204 No Content responses without errors
    • The model role manager now stays in sync when preferences are updated
    • The JSON editor now coerces numeric strings to numbers on edit

    Developers

    • New in-process domain event bus with an event catalog and a document.entered_folder event
    • SQLAlchemy session hooks publish folder events automatically, registered at app startup
    • Cron schedule triggers backed by croniter and a Celery beat tick task
    • Sandboxed template engine with an allowlisted filter and test set for safe workflow templating
    • Automations reorganized into a vertical-slice architecture (actions and triggers grouped by domain)
    • Extensive new test coverage locking automation schemas, dispatch, runtime, triggers, and templating
    • Model eligibility checks when creating automations, so only valid models are selectable

v0.0.26 turns SurfSense from a place you ask questions into a place that does the work for you. Whether you want scheduled AI workflows, event-driven document automation, or a self-hosted, open source AI agent you fully control, this release lets you build it from a single sentence.

SurfSense connects all your knowledge sources in one place.

    Watch Local Folder

Your files already live in folders. Now SurfSense can watch them.

    • Real-Time Folder Sync: Pick any folder on your computer, and SurfSense automatically keeps it indexed as files are added, edited, or removed.
    • Nothing Gets Lost: Even across restarts or network blips, pending file changes are safely queued until they're fully processed.
